OBITUARY FOR PROFESSOR GIUSEPPE BASSO

On behalf of the Hellenic Society of Pediatric Hematology-Oncology (HeSPHO)

Professor Giuseppe Basso, born in 1948, former director of the Pediatric Oncohematology clinic in Padova, died on 16 February, 2021 in Padova, after a long-lasting hospitalization due to Covid-19.

Professor Giuseppe Basso was an intelligent, sharp-minded and passionate physician who saved numerous children’s lives with malignancies through his clinical work. His significant research activity in the field of pediatric hematology and oncology, especially regarding the pathogenesis, prognostic values and treatment of acute lymphoblastic leukemia and the mechanisms underlying myelodysplastic syndromes had even greater impact in pediatric hematology and oncology. With his passionate spirit and critical thinking, researching and writing he contributed to the innovative advances that resulted in better survival of children with cancer.

Professor Giuseppe Basso was always wearing a friendly smile and was beloved by his young patients and their families. His kind and critical on a justified basis personality was highly esteemed by his Italian and International colleagues.

The whole community of Pediatric Hematology and Oncology in Greece, feels devastated for the loss of Guiseppe Basso, an eminent personality and valuable physician in the field of medicine.

We express our heartfelt condolences and affection to his family and his colleagues and our deepest respect and acknowledgement to his long-life achievements.
