Renal Tumor Study Group (HeSPHO-RTSG)

Greek Renal Tumor Study Group (HeSPHO-RTSG) participates in SIOP-RTSG studies for the first time as a country whereas in the past individual departments had participated in SIOP 93-01 and SIOP 2001 studies. The first patient with renal tumor was registered in the new protocol Umbrella in July, 2017. HeSPHO-RTSG makes efforts on being compliant with any step of these studies aiming to achieve the best care for children with renal tumors. In Greece, 7 Oncology Departments care for approximately 15-20 new patients with renal tumors (up to the age of 16) per year. Pathology evaluation and radiology work – up takes place in the corresponding labs of each Oncology department. MRI, CT scan and nuclear medicine facilities are available for all Greek patients. All these participating centers agree to be fully compliant with the UMBRELLA Study protocol. Central pathology review is being done by the corresponding regional Panel whereas Central radiology, radiotherapy and surgical review have been organized on a national level in cooperation with the corresponding regional Panels. Functional biobanking structures has been established on a National level. HeSPHO-RTSG members participate in all international meetings for childhood renal tumors as well as in numerous scientific projects and publications (Delphi study, Relapsed RT study for organoids, Targeted therapies for RCC etc).
HeSPHO-RTSG members are in close contact with SIOP-RTSG panels of Umbrella protocol in order to provide the best care for Greek patients with renal tumors. The overall aim of the Umbrella protocol is to harmonize the clinical relevant standard diagnostic procedures for all pediatric renal tumors within SIOP and to provide imaging studies and biomaterial from all of these patients, to find new and better risk factors for treatment stratification and molecular targets for novel therapeutic approaches. This will help to improve short and long-term outcomes for all children with renal tumors through the introduction of a more ‘personalised’ approach.
