4th Department of Pediatrics, Aristotle University– Paediatric Haematology Unit

The Pediatric Haematology Unit of the 4th Department of Pediatrics, AUTH, aims to investigate and treat haematological and oncological problems of neonates, infants, children and adolescents. In particular, the Unit manages patients with a variety of quantitative and qualitative disorders of red and white blood cells and platelets, disorders of haemostasis and thrombophilia. Apart from inpatients, the Unit also provides consultations to other Departments (Neonatology/NICU, Paediatric Surgery, ENT, Orthopaedics, Ophthalmology and Plastic Surgery). The Unit aims to complete a full diagnostic work-up, staging, central line insertion, and pre-chemotherapy screening of patients with neoplastic diseases of the blood and solid tumors, in collaboration with the Haematology Laboratory, Interventional Radiology and Pediatric Surgery. Over the past three years, we have assessed and/or treated more than 300 unique patients with a variety of conditions that span the entire spectrum of haemato-oncology. In addition to the inpatient service, we also provide assessments on the weekly outpatient clinic, which sees approximately 250 patients/year. Furthermore, and in collaboration with Clinical Genetics, we run a monthly, specialised outpatient clinic for children suffering from cancer predisposition syndromes. We work closely with the University Pediatric and Adolescent Hematology and Oncology Departments (AHEPA and Hippokratio Hospitals), as well as with international referral centres such as the Great Ormond Street Hospital.
